Summary:
Modern science has developed a way for us to now begin to understand what foods and ingredients in processed foods can cause cancer, these are known as carcinogens. There are a few major offenders: hot dogs, doughnuts, French fries, cookies/ crackers/ chips, and processed meat/ bacon. These foods are known to have hydrogenated oils (helps to preserve food, and simultaneously add trans fat to it), acrylamides (what forms when starchy food is subjected to very high temperatures), or sodium nitrate (used to make meat look fresh, and doesn't have to be put on the ingredients list) which all have been found to cause cancer.
By looking more closely at the ingredients in our food as well as making attempts to regularly get vigorous exercise and stay hydrated, we can potentially prevent cancer. According to the World Health Organization, we can prevent up to 70 percent of cancers with these diet and lifestyle changes.

Connection:
This connects to both our cells unit and matter & energy unit. Our matter and energy unit discussed fatty acids having to due with the macromolecule lipid. One of the points in the cell unit was about cancer and how cells mutate and divide more than they should. Chemotherapy and radiation can treat cancer, but this article proves that we can make attempts to prevent it.

  1. Why do hydrogenated oils, acrylamides, and sodium nitrate cause cancer? You said that they caused cancer, but didn't say why.

    1. Sodium nitrate create cell damage which leads to cancer. Hydrogenated oil is one molecule away from plastic and becomes thicker and more vicious since many companies add a metal catalyst to it. This oil causes build up in the arteries and can lead to scarring. Most research on acrylamides is still fairly new when looking at how it specifically affects the human body, in turn causing different illnesses.

  2. why is it all of the good stuff? and to my serious question, what are some still delicious alternatives to some of the things you mentioned?

    1. Often times, when people dramatically reduce the amount of salty foods they eat, organic/ more natural foods, they find that they do not need the salty/ savory foods to be as extreme. When you don't have processed, salty food for a long time, your body and taste buds change. Certain foods that you wouldn't have thought to be salty or savory before, now are because you haven't had something with extreme amounts of salt.

  3. How does this help to learn about the treatment of cancer instead of learning about things that cause it?

    1. While certain cancer research still in fairly early stages, it's still important to have some focus on treatment of cancer. I certainly think that the majority of what we research should be on preventative care, it's not realistic to make sure that ALL people are doing ALL they can to prevent cancer in the ways that we know how. People are still going to smoke, eat hot dogs, and be in some dangerous areas where the air quality can harm them. We may never be able to fully prevent cancer, but we can still try hard to treat what we discover and learn from there.
